Freedom. That’s what the open road gives you when you’re out there on your bike. Riding your cycle around town on a summer day is great and all, but there’s nothing quite like taking off on an adventure to really test her mettle. If you’re thinking about taking off on a road trip, you may want to consider these top five motorcycle rides through New England – considered the most beautiful part of the country by many.
- Massachusetts: Boston and Cape Cod
From the deeply historic city of Boston to the seaside escape of Cape Cod, you can’t beat the roads and routes in and around these two areas.
Mohawk Trail/ Route 2 goes from Cambridge all the way to Troy, N.Y., and back. Hands down one of the best routes to take during peak fall foliage season!
Quabbin Reservoir Loop: From routes 2 to 202 to 9 to 32 to 101, you’ll meander through quaint communities dotted with Victorian homes and beautiful covered bridges.
Cape Ann: You can get here from 1A up to Ipswich then to Gloucester, Rockport and Salem. This is a varied route, with wooded areas one minute and coastal views the next. Keep going and extend your route up the coast to Salisbury, then head over the border into New Hampshire for a scenic drive up the Hampton Beach and Rye, N.H. coasts and ending in Kittery, Maine for some outlet shopping.
- Rhode Island
Though small (seriously, it’s 48 miles long by 35 miles wide), this biker-friendly state has a lot to offer. For such a small state, there’s lots of coastline to explore – more than 400 miles of it to be exact. Don’t miss stops in Providence and Newport to view the gorgeous rugged coastline dotted with huge historic mansions and dunes.
- New Hampshire
Home to the highest concentrations of bike owners in the whole nation, New Hampshire should be on everyone’s ride list no matter where you go. Again, fall foliage season is a great time to come, but if you’re into big gatherings of bikes, Laconia Bike Week in June is where it’s at. This is the biggest demographic of motorcycle riders in the United States and host to the oldest rally in the country, now celebrating its 93rd anniversary. Couple that with a ride through the White Mountains, routes from Rindge to Rochester, and routes from Nashua into Canada.
The Kancamagus Highway is a historic route, and for good reason. This is 34-mile scenic highway in northern NH going from Lincoln to Conway, featuring waterfalls, gorges and hiking trails that will take your breath away.
Mount Washington is another must-see, stretching eight miles to the highest peak in all of New England.
